I found this section of the learning to be quite frustrating; not in content, but in the overall message it gave. Basically, I really wish that it were easier to debunk stereotypes, but for a variety of reasons it's not as easy as it seems. While people now tend to be politically correct most of the time, it's completely possible that people still harbor and buy into harmful stereotypes even if they don't outwardly display them. After some inwards analysis I even found that I do that, and it made me feel super guilty because I don't want to draw on harmful stereotypes when I judge a person.
Because of this, my question regarding this portion of the lesson is: what is the best way to debunk the perpetuation of a stereotype without shoving the blame on certain people and attacking them for their actions? Would a gradual overall change in the way media displays groups of people be more effective, or would a gradual campaign for awareness work better?
Great questions. How could you go about finding those answers?
ReplyDeleteI suppose that there are a variety of existing experiments regarding the subject that I could go and look into.
