Developmental Psychology W8 P3

I found this whole section to be really interesting, and a nice change of pace. The portion I found the most interesting was when they discussed the expectations that babies have from information they gather early on. In a way, this subverted my own expectations! I had no idea that babies’ brains were capable of recording information so early on, but now that I do I feel kind of silly for underestimating them. Although I didn’t really talk about it here, I also found it really interesting how scientists were able to test babies to collect all of the information gathered about their capabilities from birth. The course goes in-depth about the scientific methods used to isolate their reactions and actions of infants.

My question is: is there any way to prove that babies have conscious thoughts? If they do have conscious thoughts, what are they like? If they don’t, when do children learn to consciously think, and how does this process develop over time?

  1. Have you been able to find any research on your questions?

    1. Not really, but I also haven't looked too much since this topic doesn't relate too much to my final thesis or presentation. It's interesting though, and I ought to look into it further.
