Ted Talk Five W13 P2

The internet has become an incredibly important space for human interaction and social change. It’s a space built specifically for people to interact with people around the globe, and that’s amazing. The problem is, the space cultivated by online environments have become harsh and unruly, which prevents people from interacting in progressive ways. If the internet was built like a city; different places for doing different things, built on familiarity and social trust, people might just be able to interact differently and more progressively. Although a complete internet overhaul is nearly impossible at this point, the creating of new internet spaces might just help people across the world to connect in more meaningful ways and change the world.

The way people interact isn’t just physical - nowadays, much more human interaction takes place online, and in completely different ways. People can’t read body language, or make a proper impression on someone because there’s so little available for someone to see this on. People online are aggressive, and this may be due to the space they’re in online; mimicking the aggressive behaviors they see others exhibit in online discussions. This won’t make social change possible is a person’s attitude towards a space is negative. Because so much takes place solely online now, social change has to rely on a variety of platforms to reach out to audiences that might otherwise be unreachable.

    1. A lot of that ability lies on the developers of the website, but working to diffuse any difficulties is important. Also, keeping an eye out for misleading or false information is incredibly important, and we have the ability to remove this information quite easily.
